Job Title: Corporate Engagement Officer
Joined the team: November 2021
How did you get into your role and come to work for Katharine House?
After working in finance for many years, I decided it was time for a change, and when the opportunity came to apply for a job at Katharine House I jumped at the chance. Trust fundraising was something that I hadn’t heard of before, so I was keen to know more. After speaking to Catherine, the Philanthropy Manager, I was sold and knew that is what I wanted to do. Fortunately for me, I was successful in securing the job and have loved getting to know all about the different types of fundraising and everything Katharine House does inside and outside of the hospice.

What’s a typical day like?
There is no real typical day as things always come up in fundraising. However, I would normally start the day by working on a funding bid for a trust or foundation that I have identified might like to support us. I then look to spend some time completing some trust research so I can identify more charitable trusts we can apply to for funding and building a pipeline of prospects, which always keeps me busy.
What do you wish people knew about hospice care?
That hospices are for living, not just for dying. They are full of laugher and friendship and the care isn’t just for patients it is for the whole family too. The hospice isn’t a sad place, it is a place where everyone works together to help make sure that every day is the best day possible for our patients and their loved ones.
How does it feel to work for the hospice?
Prior to working at the hospice, I had a limited understanding of what Katharine House did. Seeing first hand the incredible work that goes on here every day I couldn’t be more privileged to work here. I feel very proud when I tell people that I work for Katharine House, and I feel very lucky to be part of an organisation that strives every day to make a difference.
What makes Katharine House so special?
The people. I have never worked with such caring, dedicated, supportive and kind people who work so hard every day to make a difference. Also, the beautiful gardens and calm and peaceful environment. It really is a beautiful place.
Now for some quick-fire questions…
If I had to sum up my role in one sentence, I’d say: Supporting our amazing corporate and community fundraisers.
The best thing about my job is: meeting so many incredible and generous people, plus working with such a caring, dedicated and hardworking team.
My highlight since joining Katharine House is: definitely the Santa Fun Run! It was such a great atmosphere and felt incredible to be part of it.
When I was growing up, I wanted to be: a photographer. It’s still one of my hobbies, although I often end up in front of the camera as part of my role.
The best advice I’ve ever been given is: don’t sweat the small stuff. Always be kind and honest. Also, the best place to buy your flowers from is Aldi.
My proudest moment was: renovating my house after five years of hard graft. Phew!
My favourite way to unwind is: spending time with family and friends, eating yummy food, and yoga – although not all at the same time.
People are often surprised when I tell them: I am from Italian heritage but can’t speak a word of Italian.
When I’m not at work, you will probably find me: in the garden or upcycling furniture.
My go-to biscuit is: chocolate digestives – dunked, always!
My all-time favourite film is: Love Actually
I’m currently listening to: Radio 2. I enjoy lots of different music. Post Modern Juke Box and the new Tears for Fears tracks.
If I had one superpower, it would be: teleporting – imagine just pinging over to Australia and not having to do a 24-hour flight!
If I was stranded on a desert island, I would want: a boat to get off the island.
